Fear like greed is a strange commodity so don’t panic!

Many people see Insurance as an unnecessary cost and are more than happy to leave their homes uninsured and anything that doesn’t require a legal commitment to buy insurance alone.
It’s their choice and whilst we don’t agree they are necessarily right we respect their opinion. For some the fear of regret of not having paid a few £’s more to get a better level of cover, drives them to over-insure and then begrudge having done that!!
Some policies will cover more than we think and others are have nothing like the cover we assumed.
In today’s world of Insurance it’s understandable that Insurance companies want to cherry pick, for a long time they acted in good faith alone and got well and truly shafted. Now they almost want to know what side of the bed you sleep.
Getting a good deal doesn’t mean your opinion should be based on price alone, even though that’s the easiest way to assess most things. We all get what we pay for and with insurance it’s no different.
I have yet to meet anyone to enjoys filling in forms and know a fair few who go into a mini panic when presented with a simple multiple choice question.
I have also yet to meet anyone who feels insurance is a value purchase more like a begrudged one.
With meerkats and overweight opera singers still selling insurance purely on price, you need to remember a few disciplines:
- Price is an important factor but also look for what you are excluded from before what you are covered for. Some exclusions literally pass back the liability to the buyer of the policy.
- Some Insurance companies are definitely better than others
- There is a compulsory excess and a voluntary one on top.
- Some brokers will go nuts trying to sell you add-ons that you don’t need, we don’t
- When you are offered cashback check the price after the cash back against what you could pay elsewhere. Check when will you get paid or will it be discounted against you next policy
- Don’t pretend you have an unblemished record to get a cheaper price. Everyone cross references today and all you will do is have to pay up fully within in a week or be cancelled.
- Ask yourself do I really need this or that insurance or am I just getting panicky?
- Always stick to buying insurance you understand and if you don’t understand it, there’s no embarrassment in asking so that you do
Two emotions always cost. Fear and greed. Fear of regret is a powerful force, as is the need to get all the cover possible and usually when it’s not needed. Just buy what you need.
